The little girl
See six squares ahead of her
On the hopscotch wheel
Not numbered, coloured in
Brown with white insides

She throws the stone
It lands on a square
Hoping and jumping about
She reaches over
And picks up the stone

She hops again
Backwards and forwards
Finally, falling over
In enjoyment

The family watching
Her smiles
Knowing the girl is
Happy playing in her yard

Yet as I look, as a stranger
All I feel is the loss
Of what I never had.
A safe place to grow.
